
How to Measure Lawn for Sod the Right Way
A sod order that comes up short can delay an entire installation. An order that is too large leaves you with fresh-cut rolls that need a home before they dry out. The good news is that learning how to measure lawn for sod is straightforward when you break the yard into simple shapes, account for real-world cuts, and order with the layout in mind.

Walls, patios, planting beds, and edging often change between the design phase and installation day.
Measure the area that will receive sod, not the entire lot. Exclude driveways, walkways, decks, landscape beds, fire pit areas, utility pads, and any other hardscape. If an existing lawn is being replaced, mark the edges after removal or use irrigation heads and bed borders as reference points.
It helps to sketch the yard as you go. The drawing does not need to be polished. Label each section with its dimensions, identify obstacles, and write down measurements immediately. A simple field sketch prevents a surprising number of ordering mistakes.
How to Measure Lawn for Sod in Square Feet
Most lawn areas can be divided into rectangles, triangles, circles, or combinations of those shapes. Calculate each section separately, then add the totals together.
Rectangles and squares
For rectangular areas, multiply length by width.
Length x width = square feet
A 20-foot by 30-foot side yard is 600 square feet. If the lawn has several rectangular sections, calculate every section and combine them. For example, a 600-square-foot side yard plus a 900-square-foot front lawn creates a 1,500-square-foot total before waste is added.
Triangles
Triangular lawn sections are common around angled fences, corner beds, and walkways. Multiply the base by the height, then divide by two.
Base x height ÷ 2 = square feet
If a triangular section measures 18 feet across its base and 12 feet from the base to the opposite point, it contains 108 square feet.
Circles and rounded spaces
For a circle, measure from the center to the edge to find the radius. Multiply the radius by itself, then multiply by 3.14.
Radius x radius x 3.14 = square feet
A circular lawn with a 10-foot radius measures about 314 square feet. If you only have the diameter, divide it by two to get the radius.
True circles are rare in residential landscapes. For sweeping curved borders, the most reliable approach is to divide the lawn into several rectangles and triangles. Slightly over-measuring is better than treating a curve as a perfect square and discovering that the perimeter needs more material.
Add a Practical Allowance for Cuts and Curves
Your measured square footage is the starting point, not necessarily the final order quantity. Sod is installed in straight runs, while many yards include curves, sprinkler heads, tree rings, narrow side strips, and irregular bed lines. Each cut creates offcuts, and not every offcut will fit elsewhere.
For a clean, open rectangular lawn, add about 5 percent. For typical residential yards with a few curves and obstacles, 7 to 10 percent is more realistic. Add 10 to 15 percent for intricate landscapes, multiple small sections, pronounced curves, or areas that must fit tightly around hardscape.
A 1,500-square-foot lawn with a 10 percent allowance requires 1,650 square feet of sod. That extra amount is not careless ordering. It gives the installer enough material to keep seams staggered, fit borders cleanly, and avoid stretching small pieces across an exposed edge.
Do not automatically add a large percentage to every project. A simple, well-defined new-build lot may need very little extra. Conversely, a landscape with islands, curved concrete, and several narrow strips can consume more material than the drawing suggests. The layout decides the waste factor.
Measure Slopes, Not Just the Ground Below Them
A sloped lawn has more surface area than its flat footprint. Measuring only the horizontal distance can leave the order short, particularly on steep banks. Run the tape or measuring wheel along the actual slope whenever possible.
For mild grades, a standard surface measurement and a reasonable waste allowance are often sufficient. For substantial slopes, terraces, or retaining-wall transitions, measure each plane individually. This gives you a truer square-foot total and makes it easier to plan installation direction, watering, and erosion control.
Sod on a slope should be laid across the hill rather than running long seams straight down it. That installation detail may create more cuts, which is another reason difficult grades deserve a little additional material.
Account for Trees, Beds, and Small Obstacles Carefully
It is tempting to subtract every tree trunk, irrigation box, or narrow bed cutout. Usually, that level of precision does not improve the order. Tiny exclusions are often offset by the cutting allowance needed around them.
Subtract larger permanent features such as patios, broad planting beds, sheds, or substantial mulch islands. For a rectangular feature, multiply length by width and subtract that square footage from the lawn total. For a round bed, use the circle formula.
When a lawn has many small obstacles, measure the overall area, subtract only the major exclusions, then use a higher waste allowance. This is faster, more dependable, and closer to how sod is actually cut and installed.

A Quick Example for a Typical Yard
Suppose a front lawn includes a 36-foot by 24-foot main rectangle and a 12-foot by 10-foot side section. The main area is 864 square feet, and the side section is 120 square feet, for 984 square feet total.
There is also a round planting bed with a 4-foot radius. That bed is about 50 square feet, reducing the lawn area to 934 square feet. Because the bed creates a curved cutout and the lawn has a few edge cuts, add 10 percent. The final order should be about 1,028 square feet, rounded up to the supplier's available ordering increment.
